Chapter Eighteen

Medusa winced at the ridiculous amount of holiday decor hanging from Jake’s parents’ massive front porch. As far as dwellings went, the size of their home didn’t impress her all that much. It was the blatant show of extreme wealth that raised her brow.

The Underworld may be dark and smell like a sweaty jock strap in some places—okay, pretty much all of it reeked, especially when Queen P wasn’t there to fumigate it with a heavy dose of fresh air—but the miles-long veins of gold and silver that ran through her boss’s domain, deeper than any mortal could find unless they earned themselves a one-way ticket to Tartarus, made Hades one of the richest gods in existence.

Even with its ominous and foreboding vibes, Hades’ Realm was still one of the most opulent places to live. He might be dark and brooding, but he appreciated the finer things immortal life had to offer, and his palace gleamed with as much luxury and wealth as his brother’s place up on Olympus.

It was just a shade or two darker.

Even the minions that did Hades’ bidding, including Medusa, were filthy rich. She had to admit, Mort and Judith Sullivan’s mortal abode succeeded in giving her place at the Underworld Condominiums a run for its money, but it was still no comparison to Hades’ obsidian palace.

She’d definitely give it an honorable mention in the Money to Burn Department, though, especially with the thousands of twinkling lights strung above a life-sized nativity scene, complete with three kings on camels making their way toward the manger and a real drummer boy—no doubt some hard-up musician trying to make ends meet until his band hit it big—hired to stand on the front lawn and drum his ass off for guests as they arrived at the Sullivan’s annual “small” holiday gathering.

“Thanks for agreeing to come to this thing,” said Jake as they climbed the front steps together.

“I’m surprised you even asked me, to tell the truth.”

It wasn’t so much the fact that their relationship was moving at lightning speed that surprised her, she was down with that, but the man seemed to be having less trouble opening himself up and being vulnerable around her than she thought he would have had at this stage of the game.

Asking her to accompany him to his parents’ holiday shindig, where she would undoubtedly meet them, was kind of a big step forward, for both of them.

“I had to . . .” He cleared his throat. “Comet let the cat out of the bag I was spending a lot of time with someone. The fact that she kept referring to that someone as Medusa piqued Judith Sullivan’s interest and—”

“She wanted to see just how unfit I was for her son with her own eyes, in the company of her closest friends.”

“It’s the Sullivan way. My mother is . . . Well, sometimes you have to throw her a juicy piece of meat to release her jaws from the bone she’s sniffed out.”

“So I’m the juicy piece of meat? How sweet.
